Human Sacrifice
It has been a long time since human lives were openly sacrificed to appease the gods and to merit prosperity; when the "chief" went through the ranks of the lowly peasants to find a person of such a quality as to bring the most acceptable offering.
These days we when the Chief ( Financial Officer ) wants to appease the analysts and ensure prosperity for his clan, he sends his executives through the lower ranks of expendable workers and selects the one(s) most likely to provide an acceptable quarterly result. An offering to appease the gods. If we trim our costs just right will you bless us with an increase in our stock price so we can use it for equity to buy additional homes?
When we see these events happening every week why do we think it has been so long ago? Why don't we recognize these actions for what they are?
Human sacrifice is alive and is an integral requirement of those who participate in the faith of the stock ticker.

Removing "First Things" from the Blogs I follow
I may be simple and naive in the ways of American Politics, but when calling freedom of choice "monistic" and elimination of single point of view "hostile to the diversity of American life" I think even a simple and naive person has a right to dismiss the person as confused.
Richard John Neuhaus represents the current confusion plaguing American politics perfectly. First Things
Neuhaus argues that his God should be represented in American political decisions to the exclusion of all others and calls this practicing "Freedom of Religion".
If I were American, I'm not sure I would want to be "One Nation under Neuhaus's God".

Helpless Adrift on a Sea of Grey
With everything that is going on in the world or even just in North America these days, it seems hard not to feel somewhat helpless.
My one vote in the pool of millions has negligable effect on the direction of politics in my riding, province or country.
My few purchases and investments have negligable effect on the direction of the economy in the stores I frequent or the stock market or the financial industry as a whole.
The argument that we all contribute together and every vote counts seems to be a general principle that does not apply to the specific individual. I'm not just referring to the infinitely small effect, but the fact that there are infinitely many variations and combinations or choices and intentions such that there really is no overall combined effect in any one direction.
Elections are not a simple tug of war to see which side gets the most people on their side. The stock market is not simply directed by whether there are more buyers than sellers. And the world extends this complexity to include an infinite greyness between the absolutes of "true" and "false".
